The third-row seat can comfortably accommodate three adult passengers. Chevrolet Traverses 24.4 cu. ft. (691 liters) of cargo room behind its third row is larger than many full-size utility vehicles. Efficient power and car-like ride
Chevy Traverse has a long 118.9-inch (3,019 mm) wheelbase, with a wide 67.8-inch (1,721 mm) front track and 67.4-inch (1,712 mm) rear track - a combination that enables smooth, stable ride and handling characteristics.

Efficiency in the Chevrolet Traverse comes from a technically advanced 3.6L V-6 with fuel-saving direct injection technology and continuously variable valve timing. It is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission with improved shift feel that results in more confident acceleration when the driver needs additional power to enter the highway or pass another motorist.

The engine is SAE-certified at 288 horsepower (215 Nm) and 270 lb.-ft. of torque (366 Nm) with dual exhaust (281 hp/210 kW and 266 lb.-ft./361 Nm with single exhaust). Its direct injection fuel delivery helps produce power similar to many V-8 engines and uses regular unleaded gasoline.

The transmission controls have been revised to provide quicker and more consistent shifts. Along with additional transmission hardware changes, the Chevrolet Traverse is expected to continue to deliver among the best fuel economy ratings of any eight-passenger (FWD) utility vehicle.

Ride and handling improvements have been made through the use of rebound springs in the front struts that increase roll control. New shock valving has been employed for low-velocity control to deliver a smoother ride at lower speeds.

The available intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system provides increased traction on slippery roads by actively managing the torque distribution between the front and rear axles, based on factors such as wheel speed, throttle and surface conditions. There is no driver intervention; the system automatically decides how much torque to apply and delivers it to the wheels that have the best traction.

Chevrolet Traverse maintains capability to deliver improved ride and handling, offering utility-like towing capacity of up to 5,200 pounds (2,358 kg).

Smart and safe family hauler
The Chevrolet Traverse is among the safest vehicles on the road today, previously earning top honors and recognition from leading third-party organizations and in government crash testing.

For 2013 it enhances its safety reputation with the industrys first front center air bag. It is engineered to provide additional restraint to drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes, where the affected occupant is on the opposite, non-struck side of the vehicle.

European consumers will get their first taste of Lexus all-new premium compact IS sedan at the Geneva Motor Show, where the Japanese company will also display its LF-CC sports coupe concept finished in a fresh shade.
Following its debut at the Detroit Motor Show last month, the new sedan will be presented in full-hybrid trim as the IS 300h.
Lexus has said that its powertrain connects a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) driving the rear wheels, but has not yet released performance and fuel economy numbers.
The IS 300h will be offered with an F Sport package, featuring sportier-themed exterior and interior design features as well as driving dynamics. According to Lexus, the hybrid model will be sold in Europe, Japan and select international markets (no word if it will come to North America).
Joining the IS 300h is the LF-LC 2+2 hybrid sports coupe that will be presented in Geneva in a new Opal Blue finish, after the Detroit Shows red-bodied study and the Sydney Auto Shows Blue version.

Review Hyundai Genesis Coupe

In case you havent noticed, Hyundai is a company that is not known these days for complacency. With new models being introduced at a furious pace, Hyundai is constantly evolving and improving their cars. You would expect that attention to be lavished upon the bread and butter Elantra and Sonata. And us enthusiasts are simply thankful Hyundai offers a rear-wheel drive 2+2 sports coupe at all, and wed even forgive Hyundai for not refreshing a high-profile but niche car. But thats not how Hyundai rolls.

The Garage reviewed a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and came away generally impressed. For 2013, Hyundai has revised the Genesis Coupe, and the results of some minor tweaking show a considerable improvement over what was already a fine performance car. The most obvious change from outside is the new nose treatment which gives the Genesis Coupe a far more serious look to it. The bolder design makes last years car look meek in comparison. The hood scoops also add some visual interest, but they are for decoration only. Apart from new taillamps, the Genesis Coupe is unchanged from before. Finished in Gran Premio Gray with handsome 19 wheels, our Genesis Coupe showed a level of sophistication not seen in the prior car.

Hyundai also spruced up the interior for 2013. Instead of idiot lights between the speedo and tach, the driver is greeted with a more contemporary LCD screen for vital information. The center console has also been improved, again offering a more contemporary appearance. A nice touch not seen on last years car is the introduction of three analog gauges offering oil pressure, torque meter or turbo boost. Not a big deal, but it does a lot to add sport coupe credibility. The rest of the Genesis Coupes interior is untouched, which isnt a bad thing. While I still find the location of the power window and mirror controls less than ideal, the ergonomics are otherwise excellent. Visibility remains very good for a sports coupe, and as before, I found the seats very comfortable. I loved the red and black interior color combination, reminding me of my friends old BMW 633CSi. Classic.

Hyundai did not simply give the Genesis Coupe a facelift and an interior upgrade. The engine room received much attention, not that anyone was complaining for lack of power. As before, Hyundai offers the Genesis Coupe with either a turbocharged four cylinder, or normally aspirated V-6. For 2013, the base Genesis Coupe is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four rated at 274hp, a 30% boost in power over last years car. Our test car sported the V-6, a 3.8L direct injected powerplant generating 348hp, a full 42hp more than the 2012 V-6. Expect 0-60mph in the low 5-second range. The V-6 Genesis Coupe is one fast car, and the power delivery is so linear. The fact that the car produces one heck of a sinister exhaust note only sweetens the deal, and youll find yourself downshifting and blipping the throttle just to hear the fun.

If I had a complaint about the driving experience of the last Genesis Coupe, it was the shift linkage in the manual transmission. Thankfully, Hyundai heard the complaint, and for 2013 the six-speed manual is a dramatic improvement, and definitely helps make hustling the Genesis Coupe an even more enjoyable experience. Our test car was the R-Spec, meaning it has the firmest suspension and beefiest brakes offered. Even so, the car was very easy to live with, and perfectly comfortable over less than perfect roads. With summer tires, the Genesis stuck like glue to the pavement, and handling was exceptional. Its a very rewarding and easy car to drive quickly on your favorite back road.

A base Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T starts at $24,250USD. If you can swing it, I strongly advise shelling out more for the V-6. Not that the four is slow, but the soundtrack and smooth power delivery is worth every penny. The V-6 Genesis Coupes are offered in R-Spec, Grand Touring and Track models. The R-Spec is the entry-level car, but you wouldnt know it. The R-Spec includes a front strut tower brace, 19 wheels with summer performance tires, Brembo brakes, Torsen limited slip differential, leather and cloth sport seats, six speaker stereo with XM satellite radio and Bluetooth. Including delivery, our Genesis Coupe R-Spec rang in at $29,625.

That represents one heck of a performance bargain. The improved Genesis Coupe has a lot going for it. More practical than a Nissan 370Z. More lively, nimble and involving than V-6 powered Camaros or Mustangs with a much better interior to boot. Hyundais dive into the world of rear wheel drive sport coupes was impressive, and three years later Hyundai has made small changes that have greatly improved the overall package. Well done.

The 2012 Hyundai Equus Ultimate is a reasonably executed flagship luxury sedan -- but should anyone care? Flagship luxury and sound financial sense just dont go together, and thats what makes the 2012 Hyundai Equus Ultimate so tough to review.

Pricewise, the $66,650 Equus Ultimate -- the more expensive of two trims -- competes with midsize luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E550 and Infiniti M56, but no one is going to cross-shop those vehicles. That leaves the Equus fighting cars like the Lexus LS 460 and Mercedes-Benz S550 -- vehicles that, even in their old age, can stifle the 2012 Equus arguments for rational luxury on a price-independent level. 

 Interior refinement on the Equus is exactly what youd expect for a proper luxury flagship, though there are a few small omissions. We arent talking about big stuff here – little amenities like power lumbar adjustment for the front passenger seat, side bolster adjustments for the front chairs or a one-touch close feature for the sunroof, for example. Still, our Ultimate-spec testers cabin arrived positively lousy with bells and whistles – niceties like a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats all around, a refrigerator in the rear console, power sunshades and a rear entertainment system.

What separates the Ultimate from the base Equus is its rear seating configuration, ditching the three-passenger bench seat in favor of two chairs with a fixed center console. The rear passenger-side chair – the one weve named the "executive throne" – even has massage and recline functions. If you ever have the chance to sit in a four-passenger Equus, we highly recommend spending no less than five minutes exploring the features of the royalty seat. Be warned, though – even with the Equus longer wheelbase over the Genesis, those rear seats dont offer as much legroom as you might think.

Revsons Last Formula One Victory Rebuilding a Race Lap By Lap

It remains to this day one of the most controversial and fiercely debated Formula One Grand Prix races of all time.  Coming up on the fortieth anniversary of the legendary 1973 season that saw Jackie Stewart win the World Drivers Championship, theres still the controversy of who should have won the Canadian Grand Prix, which took place on September 23, 1973 at Mosport International Raceway.  What should have been a routine race ended up being anything but, with the race marking the first time in Formula One history that a Safety Car was deployed and the resulting confusion over who the actual winner of the race was.

These are the facts of the Grand Prix.  The race started with a twenty-five car field in wet conditions.  Going into the race, the Drivers Championship had already been decided with Jackie Stewart taking the honours.  The Constructors Championship was a dog fight by a mere three points separating Lotus-Ford and Tyrell-Ford.  With two races to go in the Championship including the Canadian and United States races, every position on the track mattered for the points the two constructors could gain.  Neither Ken Tyrell nor Colin Chapman was going to give an inch if they could avoid it.  By lap 24 of the Grand Prix, the track conditions had changed, creating a very chaotic and busy pit lane while teams changed tires.  On lap 33, an accident involving Jody Scheckter and Francois Cevert would create the call for the first Safety Car deployment in Formula One history.

What has been debated is who won the race.  This was significant as the finishing order of the Canadian Grand Prix essentially decided the Constructors Championship.  As the checkered flag dropped on the race, Peter Revson was the man that had been shown the flag first and was classified as the winner.  Colin Chapman, who had been in pit lane the entire race, was convinced the officials had it all wrong as a result of the pit stops and the Safety Car having been deployed during the race.  He was determined to gain the advantage over Tyrell in the Constructors Championship and proceeded to the Control Tower to file an official protest of the results.  Chapman claimed that his driver, Emerson Fittipaldi, had won the race instead of Revson. (Note:  To this day Emerson Fittipaldi continues to claim he was the rightful winner of this race.)

Tower Steward Ron Evans was packing up in the Control Tower.  His weekend was done for all intents and purposes, and he wanted to take his wife and four-year-old daughter home.  Evans had a class of high school students to teach at 8:30 a.m. the next morning.  Busy sorting through paperwork, he was surprised when he heard a throat being cleared and looked up to see Colin Chapman standing in front of him.  Evans had a sinking feeling he was not headed home as soon as hed hoped and braced himself as he asked Chapman if he could help him with anything.

I wish to file a protest came the polite and short reply in Chapmans rather bland English accent. Chapman had all the necessary paperwork completed and in hand to turn over to the officials.

Evans referred Chapman to the Clerk of the Course, Paul Cooke.  Cooke referred Chapmans protest to the Chief Steward, Dr. Sid Mandel, for action.  Sometime approximately two hours after the checkered flag had fallen, Mandel called to order one of the largest and important protest hearings in Formula One history.  The hearing was attended by 22 representatives from all the participating Formula One Teams, the Stewards, and representatives of the Canadian Race Communications Association, the official Timing and Scoring organization of the race.  Approximately 30 people set about the daunting task of figuring who had won the 1973 Formula One Grand Prix of Canada.

It should be noted that in 1973 there were no transponders or computerized/electronic timing equipment.  The technology simply did not exist until the late 1980s.  All timing and scoring was done on lap charts by hand.  The same method used to determine the winner of an amateur race was used to determine the winner of the highest level of motorsport competition in the world.  It is a dying skill in the todays motorsport world, with less and less people able to maintain a handwritten lap chart as each year passes and the sport becomes more reliant upon technology to provide the information needed.

Mandel acted as the Chairperson of the hearing while Evans took notes and minutes.  Each Team was represented by the individuals that had created the Teams lap charts for the race.  In addition, the lap charts of the official Timing and Scoring representatives were included.  While several witnesses including Paul Cooke spoke before the meeting, there were no other attendees.  In the seven hours that followed the start of the meeting the Teams themselves, with the assistance of official Timing and Scoring, reconstructed the entire 80 lap race one lap at a time.

Current ASN/Canada FIA International Steward Terry Dale has found himself in similar circumstances during his tenure as a Chief Steward.  However, Dale has never had to hold a protest hearing as large and as complex as this one.

Its a huge task to hold a protest hearing with this many people in it.  I have had several teams involved in a protest hearing but never have I required every race teams involvement.  It would be an absolutely monumental task and the level of diligence and detail required for this meeting is far beyond anything I have ever dealt with.  I cannot begin to imagine the level of stress and pressure put on those involved.

Using their handwritten lap charts, the Teams agreed after each lap as to the position of each car in the race.  The accuracy and ability of the Teams to accomplish this feat stunned Evans, who admits it was incredible to witness.  The level of detail the Teams were able to put into the reconstruction of the race left no doubt as to what the final result was.  There was no arguing, fighting, or disagreement during the meeting that required intervention by Mandel.  The final decision signed off by Mandel was a set of race results determined by all 11 Formula One Teams and official Timing and Scoring themselves using their own handwritten lap charts.  The official results of the race published and available today were determined and agreed upon by all of the participating Formula One Teams, including the protesting team of Lotus-Ford, and not a result decided independently by the Stewards.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday, September 24, 1973 the victory for the race was confirmed as being Peter Revsons.  In losing his protest, Chapman was denied the advantage he thought was needed going into the final race of the season.  Trailing by one point in the Constructors Championship, Tyrell lost the Constructors Title by ten points at the end of the United States Grand Prix.  That loss would unfortunately become insignificant due to the death of Tyrell driver Francois Cevert at the U.S. Grand Prix.  In addition, that 1973 Canadian Grand Prix victory would be the last one for Revson, who died in a testing accident in March of 1974.  It would also be 20 years before Formula One would again deploy a Safety Car in a race, a sight that is quite common place in modern racing.

The 1973 Canadian Grand Prix goes down in history as being unique for many reasons.  Until now, no one knew that its finishing order was a testament to the ability of human beings to reconstruct a race in full from handwritten lap charts and to cooperate in the pursuit of the truth.  It is one of the most incredible feats in the history of motorsport and should be one of the reasons why the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix is remembered most.  Not every race is won on the track or in pit lane.  Sometimes the race is won in a handwritten lap chart.  Its an important lesson to remember, particularly in the modern era of computers, transponders, and timing loops.

A look back to the start: at the beginning Volkswagen built one of the most successful cars of all time and did not even give it a name. Why should it? After all, it was the Volkswagen! People loved it, and on all of the worlds continents the small car was nicknamed according to precisely what it looked like: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or ???! It embodied the automotive concept itself and symbolised the democratisation of mobility. 21.5 million cars were sold. Then the New Beetle arrived in 1998. It introduced a new automotive feeling to the world and brought with it Beetle Mania. In 2010, the Final Edition completed the New Beetle series that had sold more than one million cars. And now? A look forward. The future of the most famous car in the world begins now. In a completely new generation. Its The Beetle! And because Volkswagen and the Beetle call the globe their home, the new car is celebrating a transcontinental world debut - simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York .

Technological goal: high-tech in harmony with the environment
Volkswagen Beetle is an icon. This car tells a story. Only someone who knows its history could make a new generation of this Volkswagen a reality. The task ahead for the engineers was very clear. They had to develop a high-tech car that was still affordable, did not leave any stone unturned, integrated the communication technologies of our times and of course achieved the lowest environmental impact. It also had to be a car that places driving fun at the forefront. The new generation VW Beetle would have to be a very agile, dynamic performer, and the people who developed the Golf GTI would also be able to achieve this.

No previous Beetle was this fuel efficient. High performance no longer suffices by itself: At 4.3 l/100 km (European 1.6 TDI) and 33 mpg (American 2.0 TDI), the new Volkswagen Beetle is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever.

Design target: "Design a new original!"
The most recognisable automotive design in the world. Coke bottle, iPhone, Ray Ban Aviator, Beetle - how does one reinvent a design that is so recognisable and independent? There is a clear answer to this: It is necessary to understand the product and the brand; then it works! Volkswagen Design Chief Walter de Silva (Group) and Klaus Bischoff (Volkswagen Brand) "understand" both and therefore they set this as the objective for the Beetle: "Design a new original!"

Challenge as a thrill. The team began its task under Bischoffs guidance. The challenge of designing a new Volkswagen Beetle was inspiring. The designers knew that they wanted to develop the original Beetle profile more than on the 1998 New Beetle. They also made very dynamic proportions a high priority. An interesting aspect was that more than a few team members actually own their own air-cooled Beetles. It has also become a cult car among younger designers at Volkswagen. And that is how the final design of the 2011 Beetle came to be in Wolfsburg - a car of today as well as a design tribute to the automotive seed of an entire corporate group. And unmistakable indeed: If one were to take the first Beetle and the new Beetle and place them in a room together - shining light just over the roofs and viewing them from the side - one would see that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical.

No standing still: "We remade every part."
Bolder, more dynamic, more masculine. A comparison to the 1998 New Beetle shows this: nothing remained as it was on the old car: "The Beetle is now characterised by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front bonnet is longer, the front windscreen is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism," explains Klaus Bischoff. While the New Beetle was defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), the new model has broken free of this geometry. The roof profile actually runs distinctly lower and can be considered a continuation of the Ragster concept car shown in Detroit in 2005 - a type of hot rod based on the New Beetle. The new Beetle is bolder, more dynamic, more masculine.

The figures confirm this: The new car is 1,808 mm wide (84 mm wider), 1,486 mm tall (12 mm lower) and 4,278 mm long (152 mm longer). This has resulted in entirely new proportions. The gain in length meant that the roof could be extended further, the front windscreen could be shifted back, and the rear section could follow the contour of the original Beetle. The new focal point is the C-pillar. In parallel, the development team increased the cars track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the VW Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.

2011 styling. Despite all of its individuality, the styling follows the Volkswagen design DNA created by Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff. It clearly expresses itself in the horizontal image of the front bumper, front air inlet, straight lines of the bonnet edges, the precisely drawn line between the A-pillar and C-pillar and the styling of the rear lights.

Beetle, Microbus, original Golf. And yet it was possible to preserve all of the Volkswagen Beetles typical styling characteristics. This should come as no surprise; after all, it was vehicles like the Beetle, Microbus and original Golf that had a decisive influence on Volkswagens "design DNA." Of course, some of the Beetles longstanding characteristics remain: these include its round headlights (optional bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights are available for the first time in this model series), the flared wings, the shapes of the bonnets, sides and door sills and - more than ever - the large wheels (up to 19 inch) that can be integrated. A new feature is the rear spoiler that is homogeneously integrated in the design (standard for TSI engines with 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS); it aggressively maintains contact with the road on this Volkswagen, which has a top speed of up to 225 km/h, depending on the engine, and is available in the three equipment lines "Beetle", "Design" and "Sport". Incidentally, the top surface of the rear spoiler is always black, while its underside is painted in body colour. These colours - 12 different hues - will make everyday car driving more vibrant with names such as "Saturnyellow" and "Denim Blue".

An original interior like no other
The cockpit makes a visual impression. Is it possible for a cockpit to make an impression? Are you kidding? By its very nature! Car drivers sit in the cockpit. Sometimes for hours at a time. And yet, there are cars whose cockpits do not leave any lasting impression. They have a "look alike" appearance, as the marketing people say - one easily mistaken for another, lacking charisma. The VW Beetles cockpit, on the other hand, is unique, unmistakable, cool, classic and designed with a passion for detail. This cockpit is perceived as something special.

Everything within reach and sight. The shape and use of colour in the painted or carbon-look front facia panel of the dashboard hark back to the design of the first VW Beetle, yet the new car does not have a retro look. In Europe, for example, this facia is styled in "Schwarz uni" (Black) on the base model ("Beetle"); in the "Design" equipment line, it is always painted in the specific exterior colour. Customers choosing the "Sport" level get the carbon look ("Carbon Fibre"). Regardless of which colours are used, Volkswagen drivers will be able to locate every interior feature with their eyes closed.

And yet everything has been redesigned. Three round instruments arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) provide all key information; integrated in the speedometer (middle position) is a multifunction display. From the "Design" equipment level, the adjustable air vents and the instruments have chrome bezels. This also applies to the audio/navigation systems optimally located in the drivers visual field on the dashboard, framed by two air vents. This also includes the controls for the climate control system. Everything is within grasp and sight.

Comeback of the glovebox. Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glovebox integrated in the front facia whose lid folds upward (the standard glovebox that is also integrated opens downward). Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge. Also new: the steering wheels specially designed for the Volkswagen Beetle with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line. Details like these clearly indicate that the occupants are in a Beetle - theres no mistaking it.

Air-cooled Beetle. New Beetle. The Beetle. A distinguishing feature of The Beetle - the third generation if you will - is that its interior ergonomics and packaging are based on completely new parameters. While drivers in the air-cooled Beetle travelled in a very low-slung seat, and drivers of the New Beetle felt as if they were chauffeured because the bonnet was so far forward, the latest Volkswagen Beetle now offers an agile, driver-oriented coupé experience. Every feature is within easy reach. In addition, Volkswagen has once again succeeded in implementing a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The cars styling, ergonomics, operability and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature.

The New Beetle was a cathedral inside. In front, the Beetle is now somewhat lower in profile, since the domed roof of its predecessor has been eliminated. It now offers 1,044 mm interior height instead of the previous 1,082 mm. However, the 38 mm will hardly be missed, even by very tall drivers, since the New Beetles interior was a "cathedral" among compact cars. Meanwhile, in the rear seating area, the longer roof section results in a distinctly larger feeling of space. The bootspace is significantly larger; it now holds 310 instead of 209 litres. As usual, the car has a split, folding rear seatback, and a wide opening bootlid making it is easy to load and unload.

More optional features: individualising the VW Beetle
"Beetle", "Design" and "Sport". The new Volkswagen will be available worldwide in the three equipment lines "Beetle", "Design" and "Sport". Each of these versions has a very unique character. In addition, individual markets themselves will emphasise certain aspects. Volkswagen will announce individual parameters of these customisation levels at an international driving presentation for journalists. In addition to the three equipment lines, the Beetle can be customised with a wide choice of optional features. An overview of certain key features:

Bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. Volkswagen is offering the Beetle with bi-xenon headlights for the first time. 15 LEDs frame the xenon module on the outer perimeters of the headlights; they implement the daytime running lights and parking lights.

Panoramic roof. It is transparent, and it can be tilted or opened. Therefore, the exact name is: panoramic tilt/slide glass sunroof. Much more important: It is 80 percent larger (glass surface area) than on the previous model. Incidentally, the insulating glass blocks 99 percent of UV radiation and 92 percent of heat energy.

Radio-CD and radio-navigation systems. The New Beetle was exclusively available with radio-CD systems specially designed for this model. No navigation systems were offered. Now, Volkswagen is taking a completely different approach and is offering all of the systems available in other model series such as the Golf, Jetta or Passat on new VW Beetle as well. Standard in the Beetle is the RCD 310 with 8 loudspeakers, which is a very good audio system (includes dual tuner). The top audio system is the RCD 510 with integrated CD changer, interface for SD cards and touchscreen. An attractively priced entry-level radio-navigation system is the RNS 315 with 5-inch touchscreen (400 x 240 pixel), CD player, SD card slot and dual tuner. The top radio-navigation system model is the RNS 510. It offers refinements such as a 6.5-inch touchscreen, DVD player, voice control, SD card slot and 30 Gigabyte hard drive.

Premium sound system by Fender. Anyone knowledgeable about the world of rock music is familiar with such greats as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The first played Fender guitars, while the latter still does. Now, the legendary producer of US musical instruments and amplifiers - in a joint venture with Panasonic - is exclusively sharing its know-how with the Volkswagen brand. The result is an optional Fender sound system that is being offered in the Volkswagen Beetle with an additional woofer and 400 Watts of output power. Those choosing this sound system also get adjustable interior ambiance lighting. Besides providing indirect illumination, it also includes two light rings around the loudspeaker boxes in the doors. In Europe, the Volkswagen Beetle is the first car to offer a Fender sound system.

Keyless Access. The Keyless Access locking and engine starting system is appearing for the first time in the Volkswagen Beetle; it operates without a door or ignition key. When one of the front door handles is touched, the system detects access authorisation from a transmitter carried in the persons jacket, trousers or hand bag; it then unlocks the Beetle and enables an engine start via the engine start button. Locking of the Volkswagen is from the outside, also activated by touching one of the two door handles; in this case, however, a specially marked surface is used.

All round safety. Lets get to the point. In The Beetle, Volkswagen is building an automobile that is one of the safest in terms of both active and passive safety. Naturally, the ESP electronic stabilisation programme is standard, as is an effective network of six airbags that protects in the passenger compartment. Naturally, the car body - much of it laser-welded and galvanised - exhibits one of the best torsional rigidity values in the segment at 26,000 Nm/º. Naturally, because safety is a fundamental quality in a Volkswagen.

Engines: top fuel economy of 40 mpg and 4.3 l/100km
US diesel with 140 PS. When it comes to engines, all signs point toward sustainability. In the USA, the VW Beetle will be offered as a turbodiesel for the first time. The Beetle 2.0 TDI (103 kW / 140 PS) meets all USA emission limits and attains 40 mpg fuel economy in the Highway cycle, 29 mpg in City driving, and 33 mpg combined. As a result, the Volkswagen Beetle is a good choice as one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its class. Incidentally, the Volkswagen not only has excellent fuel economy values in the version with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but also - and this is a technical debut in the Beetle as well - with the optional 6-speed dual clutch transmission.

US petrol engines with 170 PS and 200 PS. Fuel economy values were also improved in the 2.5-litre five cylinder petrol engine, which was already a success in the previous model. The manually shifted VW Beetle attains 22 mpg (City), 31 mpg (Highway) and 25 mpg (combined). Its counterpart with a 6-speed automatic comes in at 22 mpg (City), 29 mpg (Highway) and 25 mpg (combined) - this represents an increase of up to 10 percent in fuel economy. Pioneering: even the Beetle 2.0 TSI with 147 kW / 200 PS of power attains a combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. The large TSI is also available with an optional 6-speed DSG.

World engines with 105 PS, 140 PS, 160 PS and 200 PS. In markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe and New Zealand, the new Volkswagen Beetle will be offered exclusively with charged engines. All engine versions - all of them with four cylinders - are being used for the first time in this model series. The car exhibits significantly reduced fuel consumption and emission values compared to the previous model thanks to the switch to turbo-petrol (TSI) and common rail turbodiesel direct injection engines (TDI). The three charged petrol engines of the Beetle output 77 kW / 105 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. The two diesel engines develop 77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS (TDI engines are not offered in China). All five engines may be combined with a dual clutch transmission as an option.

Engines with 160 PS and 200 PS in detail. Even the fast moving 225 km/h VW Beetle 2.0 TSI with 200 PS of power consumes just 7.4 l/100 km (equivalent to 173 g/km CO2) with a manual transmission. Also extremely economical is the 1.4 TSI with 160 PS shifted by a 7-speed DSG; in the Beetle it consumes just 5.9 l/100 km (139 g/km CO2). Fuel economy data like this makes the Beetle 1.4 TSI DSG (top speed: 207 km/h) a pleasant surprise in the engine programme. By comparison, the previous model with 110 kW / 150 PS attained a value of 8.9 l/100 km in the automatic version. Despite 10 PS more power, fuel consumption was reduced by 3.0 l/100 km or 34 percent.

Differential lock for top petrol engine. To ensure that the power of the two strongest Volkswagen Beetle versions is applied properly to the road in quickly approached curves as well, the models with 160 PS (European version) and 200 PS (worldwide) come with a factory-installed XDS electronic differential lock. This system extends the familiar EDS functionality. XDS improves handling in fast curve driving and calibrates the car toward more "neutral" steering; it does this by using active brake intervention to prevent wheelspin of the unloaded wheel on the inside of the curve, and this improves traction.

Engines with 105 PS and 140 PS in detail. The most fuel-efficient petrol engined model is the Beetle 1.2 TSI with BlueMotion Technology (including Stop/Start system and battery regeneration) and 105 PS with a top speed of 180 km/h. It has a combined fuel consumption of 5.5 l/100 km (129 g/km CO2). The comparable previous model (75 kW / 102 PS) consumed 7.5 l/100 km. Savings: 2.0 l/100 km or 27 percent. An extremely sustainable performer is the Beetle 1.6 TDI with 105 PS. At 4.3 l/100 km (equivalent to 112 g/km CO2), this diesel version is the most fuel-efficient VW Beetle ever built with BlueMotion Technology. Its fuel consumption is 20 percent lower than even the existing TDI engines which have always been very fuel efficient. Incidentally, on the Autobahn, the new Beetle 1.6 TDI with BlueMotion Technology can reach a top speed of 180 km/h - in this case, fuel economy is not gained at the cost of performance. This is especially true of the even higher performance TDI with 2.0 litre displacement and 103 kW / 140 PS. This torque-strong turbodiesel (320 Nm from 1,750 rpm) takes the Volkswagen Beetle to a top speed of 198 km/h and combined fuel consumption of just 4.9 l/100 km (equivalent to 129 g/km CO2).
