Honda to Debut New Civic Wagon Concept and Updated NSX at Geneva Auto Show

With the 2013 Geneva Auto Show being less than a month away, auto manufacturers are beginning to reveal details about the models they will debut in Switzerland.
Honda today announced that it has three premieres for the event. The first one is the Civic Wagon Concept, which the Japanese company says will provide “strong cues” for the production model that will be added to the European C-segment model’s line-up, likely within the next year or so.
The NSX Concept that was unveiled last month at the Detroit show as an Acura and gave us a look at the new supercar’s nearly production-ready interior will make its European debut in Geneva, naturally with Honda badges.
Finally, Honda’s stand will also feature the new CR-V compact crossover with the company’s new 1.6-liter i-DTEC diesel engine that is already available in the Civic hatchback. The new variant of the CR-V will be offered in European markets only with front-wheel drive and a manual transmission, with sales scheduled to start in autumn.

NASCAR Kesolowski Makes All The Right Moves to Win at Talladega

Brad Kesolowski celebrates with a burnout after getting his second win of the season in the #2 Miller Lite Dodge.

Talladega has always had the danger, the excitement, and the reputation for the Big One with the potential for disaster.  43 cars entered the arena ready to do battle with the high temperatures Mother Nature provided and the other gladiators vying for a win.  Everyone chose their dancing partners but for the first 3/4 of the race, chose to battle their own cars instead of those around them.  Doing their best to keep the engines cool and their equipment ready for the final push at the end of the race.  Those who tried and failed are amongst NASCAR elite.  Jimmie Johnson lost his oil pump as did Ryan Newman.  Jeff Gordon succumbed to over heating issues late in the race, only to be caught up in the first of 3 wrecks in the final stages of the race.

But in the end it was Brad Kesolowski who made a move that no one expected.  He kept his engine cool, he stayed out of the carnage, and he made it look easy pulling away from Kyle Busch, the car that was pushing him to the lead, with a move that broke the momentum of the push and allowed the lead car to win the race instead of the slingshot pass weve become so accustomed to.  Riding up the track to the outside of turn 3 and diving down towards the infield, Kesolowski broke the 2 car draft leaving Kyle Busch with a wall of air to slow him down, as the #2 Miller Lite Blue Deuce pulled away by what looked to be at least 3 car lengths.  With the 5 previous races having been won by the car in second position after passing the car they were pushing, everyone was expecting a different outcome, but Brad had a plan.

I had this whole plan if I ever got in that situation where I was leading; I thought about it and thought about it, dreamed about what to do, and sure enough, going into (Turn) 3, it was just me and Kyle, Keselowski said. I knew the move I wanted to pull. It worked because the guy running second should have the advantage, but I had this move all worked up in my mind.

That allowed me to drive untouched to the checkered flag, Keselowski said. It wasnt easy to convince myself to do that, but it was the right move.

Two wins, with the wild card and all, that almost makes you immune to missing the Chase, Keselowski said. This team is going to be strong come Chase time. The best is yet to come.

Kyle Busch was caught flat footed by Brad Kesolowskis finshing move at the end of the Aarons 400 at Talladega.

The move caught Kyle Busch completely off guard, even thinking he had screwed something up himself when Brad broke loose and ran away from him.

I must have screwed something up, because we got to Turn 3 and came unhooked, said Busch. Just gave the win away over there. Not sure exactly what happened. We definitely need to go back and figure out what it was.

Im not sure he did anything, Busch said. If he did, hes pretty smart. But I think our stuff just came unplugged.

If youre leading, being pushed, plan on finishing second. Thats all there is to it. Hes no dummy, thats for sure, said Busch in post race interviews.

Matt Kenseth was still trying to figure out how his car, which had been the fastest all day and had led the most laps, was unable to close at the end.  On the final restart his teammate Greg Biffle was pushing him from the line, but his car was too fast for Biffle to get up behind and push.  The gap between the 2 Fords allowed Kesolowski and Busch to fly by and race themselves to the finish.

I think we had the winning car, really just didnt have the winning driver, Kenseth said. I looked forward for a second, when I looked back, Greg and I were separated, those guys were already outside of him. With me not paying attention, keeping us hooked up, just cost us a shot at the win, cost Greg a shot at the win.

I wasnt too fast. I was just too stupid I guess at the end to keep a win.

Matt Kenseth led the most laps for the day but was unable to capitalize at the end.

Its hard to whine about leading most of the day and finishing third, Kenseth said. Its just disappointing on the last restart when I had control over keeping Greg with me and I did a poor job of managing that. We got separated and got beat.

It probably didnt help that we had a piece of the body break off on the B-post and had the fender tracked in a little bit, Kenseth said. That was my fault because I ran into [Mears] with the right front. It didnt help us, but we had a fast car.

It was my fault, Kenseth said. I needed to drag the brake more and get off the gas more to make sure he stays attached. But honestly at Daytona, we came unattached and they couldnt get a run back on me. When we did come apart, there really was no bottom lane. He lost all his speed.

No for all the fans who have been complaining about boring long green flag runs, Talladega had a few of those, but the excitement of the last 40 laps made all the boredom fade.  The fact that no one was injured as a quarter of the field was taken out of the race and all but 19 cars fell off the lead lap is a testament to the safety developments that NASCAR has been implementing over the past 10 years.  Cars completely torn up and drivers walk away uninjured.  It may be expensive for the owners, but the fans like to see the action, as long as no one is injured.  The Big One is always a game changer as no one knows when it will happen, or who it will take out.

Take Jeff Gordon for example.  He is having one of the most bizarre seasons of his career.  Having won the Pole for the race, he faded back early.  He showed signs of being able to get back to the front when he wanted to, but you cant get to the front it you drive it into the wall.

This is just one of the most bizarre years that this Dupont Chevrolet and Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet has ever gone through, Gordon said. I mean, its almost comical at this point.

That was not fun. I didnt like hitting the wall, but gosh, I thought I was clear. I was just kind of cruising by on the inside. It looked to me like somebody came down and got Martin [Truex Jr.], and that turned him into me. Thats just the way our seasons been going.

Tony Stewart was his usual sarcastic self when talking about the wrecks in the final laps of the Aarons 499.

In typical Tony Stewart fashion his sarcasm was in excellent form as he talked to reporters after the race.  For those of you that missed it, earlier in the week Stewart lashed out at a reporter for asking if the lack of wrecks was costing NASCAR their fan base.  After yesterdays race he had this to say.

Sorry we couldnt crash more cars today, Stewart said. We didnt fill the quota for the day for Talladega.

Honestly, I think if we havent crashed 50 percent of the field by the end of the race, we need to extend the race until we at least crash 50 percent of the cars. Cause its not fair to these fans for them to not see any more wrecks than that. We still had over half the cars running. It shouldnt be that way.

Im upset that we didnt crash more cars, he said. I feel like thats what were here for. I feel bad if I dont spend at least $150,000 in tore-up race cars going back to the shop so we definitely got to do a better job with that.

I had a blast. It would have been a lot more fun if I could have got caught up in one more wreck. If I could have done that, it would have been perfect.

Chevrolet to Showcase Performance at New York Auto Show

Chevrolet will showcase a new lineup of performance cars for the 2014 model year at the New York International Auto Show, including the all-new Corvette Stingray coupe and convertible, all-new SS performance sedan and refreshed Camaro.
The new cars build on Chevrolet’s success in 2012, when the brand accounted for one out of three performance cars sold in the United States.
“Chevrolet customers have validated our performance credentials with their enthusiasm,” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss “Were going to give them even more reasons to be enthused about Chevrolet performance, design and technology.”
Chevrolet will showcase:
2014 Camaro – The New York International Auto Show will host the world debut of the revamped 2014 Camaro, which advances the design and performance attributes that has made it the most popular sports car under $50,000 for three consecutive years.
2014 Corvette Stingray convertible – Earlier this week in Geneva, Chevrolet unveiled the drop-top version of the new Corvette Stingray. Unlike other convertibles, the Stingray delivers an uncompromised driving experience with a similar power-to-weight ratio and chassis tuning identical to the coupe. It features an all-new, fully electronic top that can be lowered with the push of a button, and even remotely using the key fob.
2014 SS sports sedan – Introduced at Daytona in February, the SS is the brand’s first V-8-powered, rear-wheel driven performance sedan since 1996. It’s based on a race-proven, global platform and powered by a 6.2L V-8 rated at an estimated 415 horsepower. Driving through a six-speed automatic transmission, it sprints from 0 to 60 in five seconds flat.
2014 Corvette Stingray coupe – Introduced at the North American International Auto Show in January, the all-new Corvette Stingray rolls into the Big Apple 60 years after the Corvette made its public debut in New York City. The seventh generation of the iconic sports car will be the most powerful, most capable and most fuel-efficient standard Corvette ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower, acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds, and better fuel economy than the 2013 Corvettes EPA-estimated 26 mpg highway.

New Chevrolet Cruze diesel to debut at Chicago Auto Show

General Motors Co.s Chevrolet brand will reveal the new Chevrolet Cruze diesel model during a Feb. 7 news conference at the Chicago Auto Show.

GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan confirmed Monday that the Detroit automaker will debut the Cruze diesel, expected out later this year, at the Chicago show. The Cruze diesel is one of 13 new or updated models Chevrolet will roll out in 2013.

GM plans to start production of the Cruze diesel in the second quarter, with vehicles hitting showrooms in April or May, a source close to the plan said Monday, asking for anonymity because GM has not announced when production of the new Cruze will begin.

General Motors Co. North America President Mark Reuss said in mid-December that GM would be "putting the Cruze out here (in the) first quarter."

"Im thrilled with the car," Reuss told journalists last month in Pontiac. "The cars going to be great."

Reuss also hinted that the company is interested in offering more diesel-powered options in the United States.

"Theres a place for diesels here. Theres a place for diesels in the future, as well," he said in December. "At the end of the day, its still the most efficient thermodynamics of combustion that we have. The mass piece of it in the U.S. has been problematic. But now were beginning to produce clean diesels. We need some stability in the quality of fuel across the country, which that would help us calibrate and bring to market more effectively."

The Cruze diesel will be built at GMs Lordstown Assembly Plant near Youngstown, Ohio.

In August, GM announced it was investing $200 million into the Lordstown plant and $20 million at a metal center in Parma, Ohio, for tooling and equipment for a new Cruze model. The automaker planned to produce the current generation of the Cruze at Lordstown through model year 2014.

Diesel sales among all light-duty cars and trucks rose about 25 percent to 125,000 units in 2012, up from 100,000 in 2011.

Many new diesel models will be introduced over the next two years, including a diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2012 Aston Martin Db9 Comes to Touchtronic Transmission

The 2012 Aston Martin Db9 has been spied undergoing performance; and conducted their recent car  stability testing at the Nurburgring. 2012 Aston Martin Db9 would go the next ASTON MARTIN DBS. 2012 Aston Martin Db9 features a 6.0-litre V12 worth 350 kW and  has peak torque of 600 Nm.

The 2012 Aston Martin Db9 engine was set more horsepower by removing unneeded weight. The back seat was ditched. 2012 Aston Martin Db9 torque vestiges the same at 420 pound-feet. 2012 ASTON MARTIN DB9 Steel was replaced by carbon fiber for the hood, fenders, and 2012 ASTON MARTIN DB9 door-mirror housings, dropping the 2012 ASTON MARTIN DB9 has track-focused model.

DB9/DBS is for me the best GT in the world. It looks that this car has a Rapide style headlights. We truly believe that Aston Martin wont ruin the mighty body of current DB9/DBS, making only some minor changes to it. Hope they change navi. Great car anyway. Pundits have long asserted that the DB9 and the DBS are too closely linked in the looks department. DBS additions such as Rapide headlights, LED lamps and a more aggressive front end will ensure this. The car will become a bit more elegant as well. 2012 Aston Martin DB9 is a very luxurious and expensive car price of $385,000. The company promises that the car will not disappoint the buyers.

Chevrolet Moving Next Generation Camaro Production Back to the U S

Camaro

Chalk up a “W” for American manufacturing, because General Motors today announced that it is moving Camaro production back to the U.S. The next-generation Camaro will be built in Michigan, at GM’s Lansing Grand River plant, alongside the Cadillac CTS and the ATS. The Camaro currently is produced at GM’s Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario, Canada.

The move from Canada makes sense for the Camaro, which is set to migrate from the rear-drive Zeta platform it currently sits on now to the smaller, lighter Alpha architecture that underpins the new Cadillac ATS and, soon, the next CTS. (Check out our detailed breakdowns of GM’s rear-drive plans for Cadillac and Chevrolet for more.) Hence, building the Camaro in Lansing with a pair of rear-drive Caddys with the same bones just makes sense. Right now, the Camaro is the only rear-drive car being produced at Oshawa, which likely is neither efficient nor cost-effective.

GM did not specify exactly when Camaro production in Lansing would commence, but figure on the newest iteration of Chevy’s all-American muscle car arriving for 2015.

2014 Jeep Compass with New 6 Speed Auto Heads to Geneva for its European Premiere

2014 Jeep Compass with New 6-Speed Auto Heads to Geneva for its European Premiere
Land Rover will be displaying a new 9-speed automatic transmission for use on its passenger cars and SUVs at next weeks Geneva International Auto Show. The new ZF 9HP gearbox was developed by transmission specialist ZF with Land Rover being a lead partner in the project – or so the British company says.
2014 Jeep Compass with New 6-Speed
Specifically designed for transverse applications, the ZF unit is rather compact in dimensions, as despite sporting three more gears, it is only 6mm (0.23 inches) longer and actually weighs 7.5kg (16.5 pounds) less than the outgoing six-speed transmission it will replace.
According to the British carmaker, increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine provides significant improvement in fuel consumption and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions, while the smaller ratio steps help improve response during acceleration, shift quality, drive and refinement.
2014 Jeep Compass with New 6-Speed Auto Heads to Geneva
Furthermore, the lowest ratio in the new 9HP is far lower than the existing 6sp transmission, with the company stating that it is specifically designed for "off-road use, towing and more extreme on-road conditions like gradients and altitude, giving the driver a heightened sense of control".
2014 Jeep Compass with New 6-Speed Auto Heads
Another special feature of the ZF 9HP is the adaptive shifting system that allows the software to learn from the drivers techniques "within seconds, sharpening up during brisk driving then slipping seamlessly into a more economical regime just as quickly when taking a more relaxed approach," according to Land Rover.
2014 Jeep Compass with New 6-Speed Auto Heads
“We are extremely excited about the 9HP which has been tailored exactly to dovetail with the unique attributes of our vehicles,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director. “It will add another layer of performance, refinement and efficiency, further enhancing Land Rover’s world class abilities.”

2014 Chevy Cruze diesel unveiling expected to take Chicago Auto Show spotlight

General Motors Co. is expected to be one of the standouts this week at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Following an array of debuts at the 2013 North American international Auto Showlast month in Detroit, GM will unveil its 2014 Chevrolet Cruze diesel.

Little has been released about the vehicle, but analysts expect it to grab a lot of the spotlight at the show, which starts Thursday with two Press Preview days.

“It’s a big deal that Chevy is bringing a diesel vehicle to the lineup in the United States,” said Brandy Schaffels, TrueCar.com senior editor and content manager. “These tend to be higher performance cars that are giving us diesel powertrains for fuel economy and performance.

“It’s really interesting to see a diesel engine come to a mainstream consumer vehicle.”

Diesels currently represents less than 3 percent of all U.S. sales. However, some companies expect that percentage to grow to 10 percent by 2020.

Robert Bosch, a global multibillion-dollar engineering and electronics automotive leader, anticipates more than 50 light-vehicle diesel models to be announced or released by 2017 in North America, including 22 new models in 2013.

European automakers – particularly Volkswagen – have dominated the diesel market in the U.S., which has increased from 235,500 units in 2008 to 301,300 in 2012, according toEdmunds.com.

“What diesel needs is more exposure in different brands,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com senior analyst and director of pricing and industry analysis. “Chevy coming out, being a non-European car, in a volume segment with the volume car, I definitely think it can make more of an impact.”

Caldwell said Chevrolet and Volkswagen aren’t traditionally direct competitors, but with the limited amount of passenger car diesel options, that could change.

Excluding luxury vehicles, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, VW is the only automaker to offer a strictly diesel passenger vehicle in the U.S. since 2008, when Chrysler offered a Grand Cherokee diesel, which it will once again start to offer later this year.

Diesel-powered vehicles have remained a niche market in the U.S. for decades due to consumer perception, pricing and the fuel being more expensive than standard gasoline, according to analysts. Diesels cost about $2,000 to $3,000 more on average than a standard gasoline engine.

American automakers have remained reluctant to build anything but diesel-version pickup trucks and heavy-duty vans.

But now, “clean diesels” are 30 percent more fuel-efficient, produce lower CO2 emissions and maintain a higher residual value compared to traditional gasoline engines.

“People that buy them tend to know a lot about the automotive industry,” Caldwell said. “I think for a lot of commuters, diesel makes a lot of sense.”

The Chicago Auto Show, celebrating its 105th year, is open to the public from Feb. 9-18 at the McCormick Center, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive. Dozens of vehicles from the world’s top automakers are expected to debut during the show’s press preview days Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.

NASCAR Vs Hockey A NASCAR Lovers Guide to Surviving Hockey Playoffs

Image of NASCAR Vs. Hockey A NASCAR Lovers Guide to Surviving Hockey Playoffs

When talking sports in Canada the usual topic I find at this time of year is Hockey.  Its playoff time so the fans are all wearing their team colors.  Living in the land of Maple Leaf blue and white I have seen very little of this activity over the past 7 years, but the feeling of playoff season abounds.  So instead of seeing the traditional Blue and White of the Maple Leafs around the city, what I see in stead is a cacophany of colours as support for every team that has made the play offs can be seen everywhere, in every bar, on every street corner, its obvious that it is playoff time in Hockey.

When traveling in the US however it is a different type of sport altogether that allows for interesting conversations in airports and restaurants.  NASCAR fans have the same passion for their sport as Canadians do about Hockey.  Although the team dynamic is much different between the 2 sports (43 teams at each race vs 2 teams on the ice at a time) the passion of the fans is hard to distinguish between the 2 sports.  With the obvious differnence between the 2 sports, one being winter and played on ice, while the other is a summer sport and plays out on asphalt, the similarities between the sports and their fans must not be over looked.

Hockey fans come from all walks of life, rich, poor and in between.  So do NASCAR fans.  Hockey is played on ice, but the venue is always shaped in an oval.  NASCAR races on ovals. with the exception of road courses twice a year to remind the drivers that they can turn to the right sometimes.  Hockey fans love their beer, so do NASCAR fans.  Hockey players slap the rubber around the rink, NASCAR drivers burn rubber all around the track.  The biggest money making team in the league (the Toronto Maple Leafs) have not made the playoffs in 7 years and have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, the biggest money earner in the sport of NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has not won a race in 133 starts, way back in 2008, and yet in both cases, the fans always feel that next year will be different.

In the case of either sport I find, as I travel around the continent, that you can start up a conversation to pass the time with strangers simply by noticing their team colours.  It helps pass the time while sitting around in airports and bus stations, with all kinds of interesting people.  You see a guy in a Flyers jersy walking through the airport and say So man howd your team do last night? and you can prepare to spend at least the next 15 minutes in conversation with someone who can tell you every detail about the game the njight before.  Walk up to ANY NASCAR fan wearing a shirt, or a jacket and ask Howd you driver do on Sunday? and you can prepare to spend at least the next 30 min discussing everything that happened on the track the Sunday before, and how the points race is shaking out as well.

Now for those of you who live North of the Border like myself, NASCAR is a sport that is carried by the TV networks only when there is no Hockey being televised.  Most Nationwide races get relegated to the late night re-plays while Hockey is shown live.  It is hard as a racing fan to watch another sports take precident over your favourite, but then again, Hockey Is Canadas unofficial national sport. (Lacrosse is the official sport really??)  At Least theres no Hockey on Sunday afternoons.

And when it comes to game time/race time traditions, I find that there is almost no difference in how you prepare.  Make sure the beers are cold and the snacks are at the ready, because in both sports if you happen to leave the room for any reason, you might just miss something important on the screen, who slammed who into the boards, or who slammed who into the wall.

The best part about Hockey and NASCAR and the way their seasons play out is that while one is in playoffs (NASCAR in the Fall and Hockey in the spring) the other sport is just getting started.  The fans CAN actually watch both sports and not have to worry about conflicting schedules (with the previous mentioned Nationwide late night re-plays aside).

As a Canadian travelling around to watch NASCAR races it has been said that I should have my Canadian Citizenship revoked since I would rather watch racing than Hockey. In fact if you ask my kids who their favourite sports starts are, they will tell you Tony Stewart, Dale Jr., and Jimmie Johnson.  And if you ask them about Hockey they will look at you with quizzical looks on their faces and sayHockey?? I play that outside on my rollerblades sometimes.

While both sports have their version of The Redneck Fan (Canadiennes Fans in Hockey and Kyle Busch fans in NASCAR) they appeal to almost everyone because of the speed of the action onteh screen.  Anything can happen at any time, and the excitement in the voices of the announcers will bring you running from any room in the house to the television when something big does go down.

In the end, I live being a Canadian NASCAR fan.  Although the only hockey that makes it on my television is during the 3 month long NASCAR off season, I do still keep abreast of where my home town team is in the stats (not hard when they are at the bottom most of the time).  So for those racing fans out there who are having trouble dealing with the pre-emtion of our sport to the Hockey playoffs, relax, once they are over the only thing left will be NASCAR.
