Today Buick announced the official fuel efficiency rating for their new subcompact CUV the Encore. Those numbers are 25 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway for a grand total of 28 miles per gallon combined. Thats good enough for Buick to call it the, "Most fuel-efficient crossover from a domestic automaker."

Buick launched the Encore at the North American International Auto Show earlier this year. At that time it was a little nebulous who Buick was gunning for. In their news release Buick named the Mini Countrymen rated at 25/32, the Jeep Compass rated at 23/28 and the Volkswagen Tiguan rated at 21/26 as their target crossovers.

This fuel economy comes from a 140 horsepower, 148 pound-feet of torque turbocharged 1.4 liter engine. This engine is shared with cars like the Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic. 33 miles per gallon is only made possible if you choose to have the 6-speed automatic transmission put power to the front wheels only.

Since I am mentioning this vehicle on Low Fuel Consumption News you have to ask is this really a fuel miser? For someone like me that number may seem a bit low. For consumers though this offers an excellent chance for a Chevrolet buyer or possibly an import buyer to get into a vehicle that offers great fuel economy with the versatility that they expect from the crossover segement. My biggest question is, what is the Encore capable of under my conscientious right foot?
