Saddled with a rather pedantic 2.4L four cylinder engine the Buick Verano has been in dire need of the promised turbo charge engine. Buick has finally released details on the engine that will power the compact Verano. That engine will be the latest generation of the 2.0 liter direct-injected turbocharged Ecotec engine that debuted in the 2011 Buick Regal Turbo.

Unlike that engines 220 horsepower this updated version will be packing 250 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of max torque at a savory 2000 rpm. Ninety percent of that max torque is available from 1700-5500 rpm.

Buick says that the Verano turbo will hit dealers in the fourth quarter of this year as a 2013 model.

This is the engine I have been waiting for. The 2.4 liter naturally aspirated engine offered modest performance and smooth operation, but I wanted the Verano to have more. Buick has been pushing the idea of "intelligent performance" across the entire line-up. This engine falls right in line with that idea. Smooth linear power delivery is one aspect of this engine, but it will mostly likely also beat its EPA estimates handily in the hands of a driver like me. Efficient engines dont always have to be saddled with paltry horsepower numbers. I cant wait to drive one.
